Week 10

French Renaissance French Renaissance Historical Setting: Francois I was the King of France. Leonardo Da Vince was commissioned by him. He had a great love for art.  He concentrated instead on engineering and architectural projects. During the reign of Francois I, furniture often featured stretchers for support, and upholstered chairs made with silk, velvet, or tapestry fabrics were common. A popular chair type was the chaise caquetoire, known as the “chair for cackling” because it was designed for socializing and gossiping. The chairs were trapezoidal in shape, allowing people to sit close together, and they often had decorative arms and backs to accommodate the large dress hoops worn in front. I think Mexican Culture definitely got inspired by this. I remember my quinceañera and most quinceañeras, we have a thrown. I didn't know the history behind the chair, but Im definitely a fan. I felt like royalty in this chair at 15, celebrating womanhood.

WEEK 3: CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS

Image
CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS The modernity of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, legal systems, and astronomy. The classical civilization period was the beginning of Western ideas and culture, spanning the time period from 323 to 30 BC, around the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Ionian seas.  The golden age from 480 to 400 BC was a time of great achievement in Ancient Greek architecture, exemplified by the Parthenon's large coffered ceiling. Greek architecture consisted of an inwardly oriented plan sequence for privacy and climate control. This is one of my favorite characteristics because I would want a central courtyard in my dream home someday. Definitely a good touch for family-fiestas.  Cisterns: vessels that collect rainwater... i.e.: Mosaic techniques involved the use of pebbles, glass, and stone from geometric patterns, mythological figures, animals, and flowers. this is an example of Pella mosaics. the following is an example of today's applications- I ...

WEEK 2: ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS (re-uploaded)

WEEK 2:   Ancient Civilizations- Egypt Veronica Aguirre Entombing was practiced by the Egyptians, which is important because it is the reason why we have the oldest surviving pieces of furniture, including wooden furniture. This stands out to me because wood is a natural resource, and we are studying a time period from hundreds of years ago. Wood gets warped easily by the environment (the sun, temp., etc.), so it amazes me to know we are still able to see the furniture that the Egyptians designed and used.  The Egyptians are given credit for ARMCHAIRS. The type of wood used for the furniture was cedar, cypress, and ebony. Cedar is aromatic, resistant to insects and rot, and has a straight grain, making it easy to work with.  Cypress is durable, flexible, dense, and bug-resistant. Ebony is an extremely dense, dark, and luxurious hardwood. It's naturally resistant to pests and wear. Egypt liked to use high-quality material, so it makes sense that with car...
