 WEEK 6: GOTHIC ERA This era mainly applied to religious buildings in incorporating gothic architecture. Churches were the center of city life. The larger the community, the larger the worship space must be. Construction of the Cathedral Notre Dame began in 1163. The Notre Dame is a Catholic Church located in Paris. Outsanding features include pointed arches, large rose windows, and biblical sculptural additions.     TRACERY Tracery is a delicate process of design making.  WEEK 5: ROMANESQUE AND ISLAMIC  MOSQUE: central facility for prayer and worship The first mosque ever was actually Muhammad's farm.   A mosque includes perimeter walls, a covered hall of columns, and a courtyard. CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS The modernity of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, legal systems, and astronomy. The classical civilization period was the beginning of Western ideas and culture, spanning the time period from 323 to 30 BC, around the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Ionian seas.  The golden age from 480 to 400 BC was a time of great achievement in Ancient Greek architecture, exemplified by the Parthenon's large coffered ceiling. Greek architecture consisted of an inwardly oriented plan sequence for privacy and climate control. This is one of my favorite characteristics because I would want a central courtyard in my dream home someday.     WEEK 2:   Ancient Civilizations- Egypt Veronica Aguirre Entombing was practiced by the Egyptians, which is important because it is the reason why we have the oldest surviving pieces of furniture, including wooden furniture. This stands out to me because wood is a natural resource, and we are studying a time period from hundreds of years ago. Wood gets warped easily by the environment (the sun, temp., etc.), so it amazes me to know we are still able to see the furniture that the Egyptians designed and used.  The Egyptians are given credit for ARMCHAIRS. The type of wood used for the furniture was cedar, cypress, and ebony. Cedar is aromatic, resistant to insects and rot, and has a straight grain, making it easy to work with.  Cypress is durable, flexible, dense, and bug-resistant. Ebony is an extremely dense, dark, and luxurious hardwood. It's naturally resistant to pests and wear. Egypt liked to use high-quality material, so it makes sense that with car...
