WEEK 3: CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS

CLASSICAL CIVILIZATIONS

The modernity of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, legal systems, and astronomy.

The classical civilization period was the beginning of Western ideas and culture, spanning the time period from 323 to 30 BC, around the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Ionian seas.

The golden age from 480 to 400 BC was a time of great achievement in Ancient Greek architecture, exemplified by the Parthenon's large coffered ceiling.

Greek architecture consisted of an inwardly oriented plan sequence for privacy and climate control. This is one of my favorite characteristics because I would want a central courtyard in my dream home someday. Definitely a good touch for family-fiestas.

Cisterns: vessels that collect rainwater... i.e.:

Mosaic techniques involved the use of pebbles, glass, and stone from geometric patterns, mythological figures, animals, and flowers.

this is an example of Pella mosaics.

the following is an example of today's applications- I immediately referred to Swarovski glass collections in art/collection making:

Another trait that emerged from Greek Architecture is inclined columns, Three Orders: doric, corinthian, and ionic.

The Parthenon is an example of the application doric

Present applications of Rome Architecture is seen in stadiums since The Romans were the first to develop large entertainment spaces such as the colosseum.

ONE STEP FURTHER

Thomas Jefferson is an example of an architect who designed the Monticello and the University of Virginia both inspired by the Pantheon's dome and portico.

SUMMARY

Ancient and Rome architecture continue to influence the way we design and expand architecture. Balance and Repetition allowed beauty in the way details, like the mosaic pebbles and stones, or carvings were laid out. The monumental scales continue to inspire great innovation, and we continue to see the culture through the beauty in these buildings.
